A 60-year-old man from Guadeloupe has stunned the community after deliberately robbing a supermarket with the sole intention of being imprisoned alongside his grandson.

According to Ireporter Online, the incident occurred in Sainte-Rose, a commune in northern Guadeloupe, where the elderly man, a retired firefighter with an unblemished record, staged the unusual robbery. Witnesses said he walked into a supermarket near a police station wearing a balaclava and brandishing a weapon. He demanded cash from the register but also calmly took a piece of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine before leaving the store.

Moments later, police apprehended him without resistance — precisely as he had hoped. Investigations revealed that his bizarre act was motivated by a desire to join his grandson in prison, following a recent visit that left him deeply worried about the boy’s wellbeing.

The man’s lawyer, Léa Le Chevillier, explained that her client’s actions stemmed not from greed but from affection and desperation. She said the man had been devastated after seeing his grandson with a broken tooth, allegedly from being bullied by fellow inmates. “He wasn’t interested in money,” she noted. “He only wanted to be close to his grandson and protect him.”

When brought before the court, the elderly man immediately confessed to the robbery. Though prosecutors filed charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault — offences that typically carry a prison term of three to five years — the judge opted for a compassionate approach. Describing the case as “entirely unprecedented,” the court took into consideration the man’s spotless record and emotional turmoil.

Instead of a custodial sentence, the court ordered him to compensate the supermarket, undergo psychological therapy, and avoid the premises in future. He was also granted permission to continue visiting his grandson legally — this time, without breaking the law to do so.
