LP Turmoil: Suspended Treasurer Alleges Misappropriation Of Diaspora Funds By National Chairman Abure
In a startling revelation, the suspended National Treasurer of the Labour Party (LP), Oluchi Opara, has accused the National Chairman, Julius Abure, of misusing the party’s name to solicit campaign funds during a tour in the United States, raising serious concerns about financial transparency and accountability within the party…..READ ALSO Contaminated Fuel Scandal: NSCDC Vows To Prosecute Culprits In Niger”
In an exclusive interview with Punch, Opara disclosed that Abure allegedly utilized the LP’s identity to garner donations from Nigerians in the Diaspora during the campaign tour of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi. She further alleged that Abure clandestinely withdrew funds from the party’s accounts using proxy accounts, with no accountability for the expenditures.
According to Opara, the campaign funds raised during the United States tour were never deposited back into the LP’s coffers despite being collected in the party’s name. Additionally, she highlighted the suspicious pattern of withdrawals, pointing out that Abure had been the sole beneficiary of these transactions for nearly a year.
Opara’s accusations come in the wake of her previous claim that Abure diverted N3.5 billion generated from the sale of nomination forms and fundraising initiatives leading up to the 2023 general election. Despite Abure’s denial and insistence that only N1.3 billion was raised, Opara remains steadfast in her allegations, demanding concrete evidence to support her claims.
The LP’s internal strife deepened with the suspension of Opara for six months by the party’s national leadership, while Peter Obi called for a thorough audit of the party’s financial records to shed light on the alleged financial mismanagement.
As the LP grapples with internal discord and allegations of financial impropriety, Opara’s revelations underscore the urgent need for transparency and accountability within the party’s leadership ranks, raising questions about the integrity of its financial management practices.
