President Tinubu Approves Full Enforcement of ‘Nigeria First’ Policy to Boost Local Production

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the implementation of the Nigeria First Policy, a strategic directive aimed at restricting the importation of foreign goods that can be produced locally.

The development was announced in a statement broadcast by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Wednesday, emphasizing a shift in procurement practices across the country’s public institutions.

Under this policy, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are now mandated to adopt revised procurement standards that prioritize Nigerian-made products and services in all government transactions.

According to the presidency, the move follows a proposal by the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, and aligns with the broader objectives of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The details of the implementation guidelines will be provided by the DG of BPP, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, FCIPS, CMILT, ACFE,” the statement added.

Recall that on May 3, 2025, Naija News reported President Tinubu’s executive directive banning the importation of foreign goods that can be manufactured within Nigeria—an aggressive push toward economic self-reliance and industrial growth.

Meanwhile, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has urged Nigerians abroad to support the policy and align themselves with the country’s economic reforms.

In a statement issued on May 8, 2025, and signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Dabiri-Erewa described the policy as a game-changing initiative designed to prioritize Nigeria’s interests in all areas of public procurement.

She called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to rally behind the directive, which she said would empower local innovators, strengthen the economy, and uplift made-in-Nigeria products.
