Mali And Burkina Faso Deliver Stinging Blow: Officially Exit ECOWAS
In a seismic shakeup for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mali and Burkina Faso have sent a formal notice of their withdrawal from the regional bloc, signaling a fracture in the unity that has defined the organization for decades. Niger is expected to follow suit, intensifying the impact of this coordinated move…..CONTINUE READING
The decision to exit ECOWAS was announced by the military regimes of Mali and Burkina Faso, citing concerns over threats to their sovereignty as a primary motivation. The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Mali shared a copy of its formal notice with AFP, while Burkina Faso’s official news agency confirmed its own notification. Though Niger has not yet released information, the synchronized nature of the withdrawals is apparent.
ECOWAS, in response, stated that it is awaiting “formal and direct notification” from the concerned member countries. Per the bloc’s statutes, withdrawal cannot take effect until at least a year after notification.
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, founding members of ECOWAS since 1975, have faced sanctions from the regional group following military coups that displaced elected civilian governments. The trio, now part of an Alliance of Sahel States (AES), accused ECOWAS of being influenced by foreign powers and betraying its foundational principles, perceiving it as a threat to member states.
Nigeria, a regional powerhouse and the host of ECOWAS, expressed regret over the departure of the three countries. In a statement, Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry emphasized its commitment to due process, citizens’ rights, and the welfare of ECOWAS member states’ citizens. The statement criticized the actions of “unelected leaders” in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, accusing them of denying their citizens fundamental rights.
Despite the rupture, Nigeria extended an olive branch, asserting that it remains “open for engagement” with the departing countries. Nigeria has also called on the international community to continue supporting ECOWAS and its vision for regional partnership and integration, underscoring the complex dynamics at play in West Africa’s geopolitical landscape.
