Tragedy Strikes Again: Rivers Jetty Hit By Explosions, Leaving Devastation In Its Wake
A grim echo from the past, the Bonny-Bille-Nembe Jetty in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was plunged into chaos as a series of powerful explosions shattered the peace, resulting in widespread destruction of goods and properties estimated in the millions…..CONTINUE READING
This latest catastrophe marks a somber addition to the jetty’s troubled history, including a tragic fire incident in April 2022 that claimed numerous lives, including that of a pregnant woman and a two-month-old baby.
The jetty, a vital hub for riverine communities, became a scene of horror as multiple explosions ignited over six market boats, trapping passengers in a nightmarish scenario.
As the inferno rages on, panic and chaos grip traders and travelers at the jetty, evoking memories of the previous tragic events.
An eyewitness named Lartey recounted the harrowing sequence of events, stating that the catastrophe initiated with an explosion on houseboats suspected to be carrying illegally refined oil.
“The fire actually started with an explosion. Some house boats carried liquid materials suspected to be refined oil when it started. The first explosion led to two other explosions in the boats. Some makeshift buildings and structures near the jetty were also affected,” explained Lartey.
In the wake of the blasts, hundreds of onlookers stood at a distance, watching thick black smoke billow into the atmosphere. Workers at the jetty, along with volunteers, mobilized to mitigate the disaster by employing a makeshift solution of mixing detergents and sand in water to combat the flames.
“While it was difficult to access the other part looking into the deep waters, the fire subsided in some areas, but it continued to rage in parts of the river,” reported Lartey.
The initial explosion triggered a chain reaction, consuming nearby makeshift buildings and structures, as traders and travelers scrambled to salvage their belongings amidst the frenzy.
As the flames continued to spread, fueled by the flammable materials aboard the boats, questions arise about the safety measures in place at the jetty and the potential impact on the affected communities.
