Man Sentenced To 25 Years In Prison For Drug Trafficking

Justice Deinde Isaac Dipeolu issued the sentence after Bismark pled guilty to the charges brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The conviction stems from an incident on March 31, 2024, when Bismark was apprehended at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos. He was caught during the screening of a Qatar Airways flight bound for India via Doha, UAE.

The prosecution, led by Mr. Abu Ibrahim, highlighted that Bismark’s actions violated Section 20(1)(a) of the NDLEA Act, which is punishable under Section 20(2)(a) by a minimum of 20 years in prison for drug trafficking offenses.

During the court proceedings, Bismark confessed to the crime, leading to the presentation of relevant evidence by the prosecution. Despite a plea for leniency from his lawyer, Dennis W., who cited legal precedents, Justice Dipeolu chose to impose the maximum penalty allowed by law.

The case underscores the ongoing efforts of the NDLEA in combating drug trafficking, with recent actions including a significant drug bust in Lagos where substances worth billions were seized.
