Shocking Revelations: IGP Egbetokun Debunks Claims Of Lobbying For Service Extension Amidst Media Frenzy

The denial was issued in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. He clarified that the bill in question was first introduced during the 8th Assembly but failed to advance before the Assembly was dissolved.

“It is important to note that the bill, which aims to extend police officers’ service from 35 to 40 years and raise the age limit from 60 to 65, was not driven by the IGP. It reflects standard legislative practice to review and update laws based on current needs,” Adejobi explained.

The statement condemned the false claims circulating in various media outlets, particularly online, which suggested that IGP Egbetokun had personally pushed for this bill to prolong his tenure and had invested heavily in lobbying efforts to ensure its passage.

“The IGP’s support for this bill is motivated by a genuine desire to improve the working conditions for police officers and enhance national security, rather than personal gain. His advocacy is rooted in duty and reform, not self-interest,” Adejobi added.

The Force reiterated that the tenure of an IGP is already set at four years, with removal before the term’s end being solely within the President’s authority.
