Tensions Rise: IGP Warns Fubara Against Threats Of Violence In Rivers State

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning to Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, cautioning him against making inflammatory remarks and threats of violence regarding the upcoming local government elections.

Naija News reports that this caution follows Governor Fubara’s public statement, in which he vowed to hold IGP Egbetokun responsible if any breakdown of law and order occurs in the state during the elections.

The governor’s comments came after his intervention at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office, where he reportedly stopped police officers from allegedly attempting to remove election materials ahead of the local government polls.

With political tensions already running high in the state, Governor Fubara’s actions have raised concerns about potential unrest.

Responding to the governor’s statements, IGP Egbetokun, through a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, expressed surprise at the governor’s behavior and called for restraint in the pursuit of political objectives.

“The Nigeria Police takes exception to the governor’s unwarranted outburst and the baseless accusations he has made against the Inspector-General and the entire police force. We advise caution and decency in the pursuit of political goals,” the statement said.

IGP Egbetokun further condemned any threats of violence, stating, “Threatening to shed blood or burn down the state over a local government election is completely unacceptable.”

The police chief assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to safeguarding lives and property, and would collaborate with other security agencies to maintain peace throughout the elections.

To prevent any disruption, the IGP has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Rivers State. Citizens have been advised to go about their normal activities without fear of violence.
