Initiated by Minister of Works, David Umahi, and attended by Doris Uzoka-Anite from the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, the meeting aimed to address the sudden surge in cement prices across the country. Manufacturers, including industry giants BUA, Lafarge, and Dangote, expressed their commitment to implementing this price reduction promptly, pending fulfillment of government interventions.
During the deliberations, BUA Industries disclosed plans to inject six million tons of cement into the market to stabilize prices. Furthermore, the government announced its intention to foster the introduction of six new manufacturers, enhancing competition and market dynamics.
To ensure compliance, manufacturers agreed to establish a robust price monitoring mechanism, pledging to sanction any distributors or retailers found exploiting consumers.
Acknowledging industry challenges such as gas costs, import duties, and smuggling, the government committed to seeking remedies, including potential adjustments to gas pricing and import duties. Additionally, efforts will intensify to address infrastructure deficits, notably improving road networks around manufacturing locations.
With a collective resolve to combat challenges and facilitate price reductions, the government expects tangible results in the near future. The meeting is slated to reconvene in 30 days to assess progress, underscoring the commitment to sustained relief for consumers and the construction sector.
