Massive Explosion Claims 12 Lives In Turkey
A devastating explosion occurred at an explosives plant in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, leading to the death of 12 individuals and injuring five others, according to officials.
Videos captured the scene, showing debris and shards of glass scattered outside the facility, where emergency ambulances were on standby.
Local governor Ismail Ustaoglu reported, “Preliminary information indicates that 12 workers lost their lives, and four individuals were hospitalized with injuries from the blast” in the Karesi District of Balikesir Province. He expressed his condolences, stating, “I wish God’s mercy upon our deceased citizens and a swift recovery to those injured.”
Initially, officials reported four injuries, but later updated the count to five, confirming that their conditions were not serious. They also noted that no personnel were inside the plant at the time of the explosion, which had been extinguished.
The blast occurred at 8:25 am (0525 GMT) in a section of the plant that reportedly collapsed due to the explosion’s intensity.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya mentioned that the cause of the explosion, which occurred in an area away from residential zones, was still undetermined. “We are working to discover the reason behind it,” he stated.
Local officials suggested “technical issues” might be to blame but provided no further details, as experts continued to investigate the site. Authorities have ruled out sabotage, and a comprehensive investigation is underway.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his deep sorrow over the deaths, referring to the victims as “12 brothers” in a message shared on social media platform X. He stated he was promptly informed by relevant agencies and instructed that “a thorough investigation be launched immediately from every angle.”
Located in northern Balikesir, the plant manufactures munitions, explosives, and flares for both domestic and international markets. Witnesses described the scene as resembling a “battlefield.”
The deceased individuals were set to be transported to the morgue, and security forces implemented measures in anticipation of a potential secondary explosion, restricting access to civilians and the media.
Turkey has emerged as a significant defense exporter, particularly known for its drone technology, with Erdogan being a strong proponent of the defense industry. In 2020, an explosion at a fireworks factory in northwestern Turkey resulted in seven fatalities and 127 injuries, while a 2023 blast at a military explosives factory, located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Ankara, claimed five lives. This latter facility was affiliated with Turkey’s defense ministry.
