Mercy Or Justice? Evans Tells Court He’s No Longer A Criminal
Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, the notorious convicted kidnap kingpin, on Thursday, informed the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja that he has genuinely repented from his criminal past and has formally applied to the…Mercy Or Justice? Evans Tells Court He’s No Longer A Criminal
Lagos State Government for clemency.
Evans made this declaration through his lawyer, Emefo Etudo, after pleading to the amended five charges, including murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to kidnap, brought against him by the Lagos State Government.
Upon the start of the hearing, state prosecutor Sule Yusuf requested that the case be reopened for re-arraignment. The co-defendants did not object.
The prosecution alleged that Evans, alongside Joseph Emeka, murdered two victims, Peter Nweke and Chijioke Ngozi, on August 27, 2013, in FESTAC Town, Lagos.
Evans and his co-defendant, Emeka, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following their plea, the prosecution sought to remand the defendants further while acknowledging that Evans had applied for a plea deal through his lawyer.
Etudo, in his submission to the court, described his client’s transformation, mentioning that Evans has been reformed and is currently a student at the National Open University of Nigeria. He further highlighted that Evans made excellent grades in his NECO exams while incarcerated, supported by a scholarship from the Federal Government.
The lawyer also stated that Evans, now remorseful, was seeking the opportunity to educate the youth in Lagos about the dangers of criminal life.
Sule Yusuf confirmed that Evans had applied for a plea bargain and stated that it would be reviewed by the appropriate authorities. The second defendant, Emeka, had also made a similar plea.
Justice Adenike Coker adjourned the case to March 20, 2025, for further proceedings.
After the hearing, Etudo told reporters that Evans’s reformation was aided by the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Federal Government’s educational support.
