At the groundbreaking ceremony in Abuja on Friday, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, highlighted the initiative as a crucial step in safeguarding the well-being of service members who have sustained physical or psychological injuries in the line of duty.

“The military profession is one of the most challenging and high-risk careers, requiring immense physical strength, technical skill, mental resilience, and emotional endurance,” he said. “It is vital that society recognizes their sacrifices and ensures they receive the necessary care and support after service.”

He further noted that the Invictus Center would offer advanced rehabilitation programs, integrating military medicine and psychological therapy to aid recovery.

A First of Its Kind in Africa

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, described the project as the first of its kind on the continent. He emphasized its role in not only physical rehabilitation but also psychological recovery, ensuring that soldiers receive the support they need to reintegrate into society.

“Our soldiers are the backbone of our nation’s security and freedom,” Badaru stated. “Many return with visible and invisible scars, making their sacrifices immeasurable. This center, aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, will provide a space for healing, reintegration, and personal development through health programs and social activities such as sports.”

Prince Harry Applauds the Initiative

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, who was represented by David Wiseman, commended the project as a landmark achievement in the rehabilitation and recovery of Nigeria’s military personnel.

Prince Harry, founder of the Invictus Games, a global sporting event for wounded service members, expressed hope that the center would serve as a source of strength and renewal, helping future generations of military personnel regain hope, resilience, and happiness.
