Ngonadi stressed that for the proposed minimum wage to truly impact workers’ lives, it must be accompanied by a substantial reduction in the cost of essential goods. He expressed concern, drawing parallels to a past scenario when a salary increase was quickly overshadowed by a surge in market prices.

“While we are talking about minimum wage, I think the government, on its own side, has to think about how to bring down the price of commodities in the market,” Ngonadi stated, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to ensure economic balance.

As the Federal Government gears up for the inauguration of the new minimum wage committee, NACCIMA’s demand adds an intriguing twist to the ongoing discussion. The association is advocating not only for a boost in wages but a strategic effort to make those wage increases truly impactful by addressing the cost of living. This could potentially reshape the narrative surrounding minimum wage debates, emphasizing the interconnectedness of income and the overall economy.
