NANS Disputes ASUU’s Criticism Of Federal Student Loan Scheme
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly criticized the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for its opposition to the Federal Student Loan Scheme, asserting that it offers a vital lifeline to financially disadvantaged students…..READ ALSO Federal Student Loan Scheme To Kick Off In Three Weeks, Gbajabiamila Assures NANS
In a recent statement, NANS expressed dismay over ASUU’s stance, arguing that the loan scheme represents an opportunity for numerous students who face financial hurdles in pursuing higher education. The association emphasized the importance of providing access to education for all, irrespective of financial background.
ASUU, during its National Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, voiced concerns that the loan scheme could lead to perpetual indebtedness for beneficiaries and suggested alternative measures such as grants, scholarships, and reintroducing the Needs-Based Budgeting System.
However, NANS Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, urged ASUU to reconsider its position and prioritize the interests of students. He emphasized the need for ASUU to engage constructively with the government’s initiatives aimed at assisting students financially.
The Federal Student Loan Scheme, set to launch in the next two to three weeks according to Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, is anticipated to provide significant relief to students facing financial constraints. NANS reiterated its support for the program and urged ASUU not to obstruct its implementation.
As the debate continues between NANS and ASUU, the fate of the Federal Student Loan Scheme hangs in the balance, with both sides advocating for what they believe is in the best interest of Nigerian students.
