The explosion, which occurred on Saturday, has claimed at least 86 lives.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Garba Shehu, on Sunday, Buhari expressed his deep sadness over the incident and conveyed his sympathy to the government and citizens of Niger State.

“Former President Muhammadu Buhari expresses his sincere condolences over the loss of lives in the fire resulting from a petroleum tanker accident at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna highway in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State,” the statement read.

Buhari also expressed his disappointment with the recurring practice of individuals scooping fuel from tanker spills, despite repeated warnings from authorities about the dangers of such actions.

“He expressed dismay that the dangerous practice of scooping fuel continues, despite official advisories, leading to preventable loss of lives,” the statement continued.

In offering his condolences to the people and government of Niger State, Buhari wished a swift recovery to those injured in the incident.
