Nigeria Wins 24 Medals To Secure Top-Seven Finish At Glasgow 2026

Team Nigeria concluded its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with an impressive seventh-place finish on the final medals table after securing 24 medals across para powerlifting, weightlifting and athletics.

According to Ireporter Online, the multi-sport event was held in the Scottish city from July 23 to August 2 and featured 215 medal events across 10 sporting disciplines. Australia emerged as the overall winners with 170 medals, including 70 gold, while England finished second. Canada claimed third place, followed by India, Scotland and New Zealand.

Nigeria ended the competition in seventh position after winning a total of 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals.

The country was represented by a 72-member contingent. Although sprinter Miracle Ezechukwu was initially announced as the team’s flagbearer, swimmer Abdul Jabar Adama eventually led Team Nigeria during the opening ceremony, while para powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo carried the Commonwealth baton.

Nigeria’s medal chase got off to a flying start in para powerlifting, with Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris winning gold medals on the opening day. Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema and Rita Ferdinand also contributed silver medals in the event.

The weightlifting team continued the country’s impressive run as Edidiong Umoafia secured gold in the men’s 71kg category, while Onome Didih and Rafiatu Lawal emerged champions in the women’s 53kg and 58kg events respectively. Ruth Nyong added a silver medal in the women’s 48kg division.

Nigeria also finished strongly in athletics, with Goodness Nwachukwu claiming gold in the women’s F44 discus, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi winning the men’s shot put, and Ezekiel Nathaniel taking top honours in the men’s 400m hurdles.

Other podium finishes came from Jessica Oji, Udodi Onwuzurike, Temitope Adeshina, Kayinsola Ajayi and Tobi Amusan, who contributed silver and bronze medals to Nigeria’s overall tally.

The impressive performances across multiple events ensured Team Nigeria concluded the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games among the competition’s top-performing nations.
