This accusation comes following an incident where Yoruba Nation agitators reportedly stormed the premises of the Oyo State House of Assembly at the Agodi Secretariat in Ibadan.
In a widely circulated video, the agitators claimed to have established a purported ‘Democratic Republic of the Yoruba’ separate from Nigeria.
According to a statement by Army spokesman Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army asserts that the agitators fired shots at troops deployed to maintain law and order.
The statement further explains that upon encountering the troops, the Yoruba Nation adherents, dressed in foreign military camouflage with berets and armed with dangerous weapons in buses and motorbikes, engaged the troops in a shootout. However, the soldiers, utilizing superior firepower, were able to subdue the attackers, who subsequently retreated.
Nine members of the Yoruba Nation group were reportedly apprehended, and a Semi-Automatic Pump Action rifle along with ammunition were recovered during the engagement.
The Nigerian Army assures the public that necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of the area. They urge citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate security agencies.
The statement emphasizes the Army’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region, highlighting the priority placed on the safety and security of the citizenry.
