War Zone: Nigerian Army Declares State Of Emergency After Borno Suicide BombingsThe Nigerian Army has officially declared that the recent series of bombings in Borno State signal Nigeria’s descent into a state of war. This grave assessment was made by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, in a statement released on Tuesday.

General Buba recounted the devastating attacks that took place over the weekend in Gworza Local Government Area, resulting in numerous fatalities. The bombings, which occurred on Saturday, June 29, 2024, involved multiple suicide bombers deploying Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (PBIEDs).

The first explosion occurred around 3:00 PM when a female suicide bomber, posing as a beggar, detonated a device at a wedding reception on Mararaba Hausari Street. As the community began to recover and transport the injured, a second female bomber struck the same area around 5:00 PM.

Amidst the chaos, troops enforced a curfew to contain the situation and prevent further harm. However, a third explosion targeted the soldiers managing the curfew, resulting in the death of a soldier and two hybrid force members. A fourth attack was thwarted when a suspect prematurely detonated her bomb, causing her own death but no additional casualties.

The tragic series of attacks claimed 20 lives and left 52 individuals injured, who are now receiving medical treatment. General Buba expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life, underscoring the severity of the tragedy for both the local community and the nation.

In his statement, Buba attributed the terrorist attacks to recent military successes that have undermined the terrorists’ leadership and resources. He asserted that these attacks are a desperate attempt by the terrorists to project strength amid their diminishing power.

The Army has urged citizens to remain vigilant and united in support of military efforts to restore security and peace. Buba reassured that the armed forces are resolute in their mission to eliminate the threats posed by these terrorists.

“The fate of those responsible for these heinous acts will be swift and severe, as our troops are committed to eradicating these threats from the battlefield,” Buba concluded.
