No Compliance Enugu Government To Block Illegal Sit-At-Home Order After Igbo Jah’s Killing

Labeling the order “mischievous,” the government condemned the individuals responsible, calling them “criminals and opportunists” intent on exploiting the tragedy for personal gain and to disrupt the lives of Ndi Enugu and Ndi Igbo.

In a public statement, the government assured citizens it is working closely with security agencies to hold accountable those involved in Igbo Jah’s death. The statement referred to the organizers and promoters of the sit-at-home order as “enemies of Enugu State and the Igbo nation.”

Residents were encouraged to ignore the unauthorized directive and go about their regular routines, with the government pledging to protect lives and property.

Authorities confirmed that suspects in Igbo Jah’s death are currently in custody, with interrogations and legal proceedings underway.

In a statement from Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Prof. Chidiebere Onyia on Sunday, it was announced, “We are aware of circulating social media reports suggesting that some criminal and faceless non-state actors have issued a sit-at-home order in Enugu State on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, supposedly to protest the tragic killing of beloved Ogene musician Okezie Mba, aka Igbo Jah, by a police officer last Friday.”

“The Enugu State government strongly condemns the killing as abhorrent, unacceptable, and in complete opposition to our core values, especially the sanctity of human life. Governor Peter Mbah promptly ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the facts behind this incident and bring those involved to justice. The suspected perpetrator has already been identified and detained, and the investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday morning, a state delegation led by the Secretary to the State Government and the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Barr Victor Udeh, visited the grieving family to extend condolences and reaffirm the government’s commitment to achieving justice.

The Enugu State government, however, recognizes that certain criminal elements may try to exploit the unfortunate event to disrupt the state, stifle economic activity, and bring further hardship to the people.

“Those who seek to manipulate the emotions of our people in the guise of freedom agitation have no genuine intentions for a community renowned for enterprise, diligence, and creativity. They cannot represent us or our values and are merely criminals and adversaries of the Igbo people, funded to destabilize our region.

“As a result, there will be no adherence to the illegal sit-at-home order anywhere in Enugu State on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. The government will employ all available resources to secure the lives and property of our citizens.

“Civil servants, farmers, merchants, corporate workers, shop owners, educators, and all other residents of Enugu State are encouraged to disregard the sit-at-home directive, which belongs to a painful past we aim to leave behind.”
