No Vacancy? Galadima Dismisses Akume’s Claim, Says 2027 Presidency Is Wide Open

Galadima was responding to the remarks made by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who claimed that there was no vacancy in Aso Rock. Akume had suggested that Northern politicians should wait until 2031 when President Bola Tinubu completes his second term.

In an interview with Vanguard, Galadima dismissed Akume’s comments, accusing him of merely trying to protect his own position. Galadima noted that by 2027, the South will have ruled Nigeria for 18 and a half years, while the North will have governed for only nine and a half years. He believes this discrepancy gives the North a rightful claim to the presidency.

The NNPP leader continued, “While I respect Akume as a sociologist, he should recognize that Nigeria’s presidency has historically rotated between different regions, and sooner or later, President Tinubu will also vacate Aso Rock. The notion that the seat is permanently occupied is naive.”

Galadima, who described himself as a nationalist, rejected the idea of framing the issue along regional lines. Instead, he emphasized that the real focus should be on equity, justice, and delivering results for Nigerians. He also pointed out that leadership should be determined by those who have delivered on their promises, not by regional entitlements.

“We are not in a monarchy,” Galadima said. “The people, not any single individual, should decide who leads them. If President Tinubu delivers effectively and his son, Seyi, is the best successor, then I have no objections. Ultimately, the people’s will in 2027 will decide who occupies Aso Rock.”

In conclusion, Galadima reaffirmed his belief that there is a “big vacancy” in Aso Rock come 2027, in line with Nigeria’s democratic principles. He dismissed Akume’s comments as laughable and attributed them to a desire to protect his own interests, or as he put it, “protect his ‘garri’.”
