Signatories to the letter included prominent figures such as Abubakar Mohammed of the Centre for Democratic Development, Research and Training (CEDDERT), Kabiru Chafe, former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, and Jibrin Ibrahim of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), among others.

The leaders expressed concerns about the escalating terrorism in the region and the potential economic and environmental impacts of hosting foreign military bases. They highlighted the diversion of government funds and resources from critical sectors like education and healthcare towards maintaining military installations, which could exacerbate poverty and hinder economic growth.

Moreover, they raised environmental concerns, citing potential degradation of the local environment due to the construction and operation of military bases, which could adversely affect agricultural communities and indigenous populations.

The presence of foreign military bases, the leaders argued, could also strain Nigeria’s relations with neighboring French countries and have wide-ranging implications for defense and internal security.

It cautioned against the adverse effects such agreements could have on Nigeria’s defense and internal security.
