NPFL Delays Start Of 2023-2024 League Season Once Again
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has once more postponed the commencement of the second phase of the 2023-2024 league season…..CONTINUE READING
Initially slated to kick off in January, the second phase was rescheduled to commence on February 14 due to the ongoing 2023 AFCON, which concludes on Sunday, February 11.
With the Super Eagles of Nigeria advancing to the tournament’s final, drawing much attention to Ivory Coast, the host nation, the focus of many Nigerians is understandably elsewhere.
Nigeria is set to face off against the hosts in the 2023 AFCON final at 9 p.m. on Sunday, having previously defeated them 1-0 in the group stage on January 18.
Consequently, the second phase of the 2023-2024 NPFL campaign, slated to start from matchday 20, has been further postponed from February 14 to February 16, 2024.
This decision was communicated to all participating NPFL clubs via a letter from the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi.
Explaining the rationale behind the postponement, the operating officer cited the need to accommodate outstanding games before resuming the league.
The letter stated, “This is to formally notify all clubs that the new date for Matchday 20, initially scheduled for February 14, 2024, is now the weekend of Friday, February 16, 2024, to Sunday, February 18, 2024.”
However, the outstanding NPFL Matchday 15 fixture between Rivers United and Shooting Stars of Ibadan is set to take place at the Lekan Salami Stadium today, February 10, at 4 p.m.
As of now, Lobi Stars lead the league table with 36 points from 19 games, holding a one-point advantage over second-placed Remo Stars.
