NSCIA Declares Tax Reform Bills Unconstitutional, Calls For Immediate Changes

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called on the Senate to revise sections of the Tax Reform Bills that contradict Islamic legal principles. Additionally, the NSCIA proposed replacing the term “ecclesiastical” with “religious” to ensure inclusivity and avoid perceived bias. It also urged lawmakers to address major technical, political, and social concerns to ensure fairness and national acceptance.

Despite these concerns, the council expressed support for passing the bills and pledged continued engagement in policy and legislative reforms.

The Tax Reform Bills, introduced by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, aim to adjust VAT revenue sharing and introduce tax exemptions for low-income earners. However, the bills have sparked debates, with Northern lawmakers raising concerns about regional disparities, while the Nigeria Governors’ Forum supports the reforms with suggested modifications.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured a thorough review, emphasizing that the final legislation will serve national interests.
