NWPL: Obaseki Awards Cash-Prizes To Victorious Edo-Queens
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, yesterday doled out cash rewards to the state’s female football team, Edo Queens, as the team was warmly welcomed back to the state amid pomp and ceremony by thousands of fans and other residents after breaking a 29-year jinx.
The outstanding female players made history with their triumph at the Super Six playoffs, clinching a ticket to represent Nigeria on the continental stage of the CAF Women Champions League.
Jubilant fans, led by the Edo First Lady, Betsy Obaseki, joined a motorcade of the victorious Edo Queens from Western Boys High School at Ikpoba-Hill in Benin. They cheered the team through Aduwawa, Akpakpava, Plymouth, Ring Road, and terminated at the Government House, Benin, where they were received by Governor Obaseki.
The governor was joined by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21, 2024 election in the state, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and other top government officials to welcome the triumphant girls.
An excited Obaseki praised the team for their excellent campaign during the 2023/2024 season of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) and their victory at the Super Six tournament, assuring them of the state government’s continued support.
He said: “I am so happy and proud today, as you have done us proud by bringing this trophy home. The trophy we have been looking for in the past 29 years is now with us. We know you will continue to be champions. I encourage you to work hard; as your government and Governor, we will continue to support you.
“Whether I am here or not, the person that will replace me will continue to support you. You have tried, and have made us proud. Money alone cannot do it all, but we will give you money for a job well done, and for making us proud.”
Governor Obaseki announced that each player of the team would receive one million naira for their achievement, while the coaches would receive five million naira.
