Outrage Erupts: Youths Torch Police Station After Man Dies in Custody

A violent protest erupted in Rano, Kano State, on Monday following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, while in police custody during interrogation.

The unrest, led predominantly by youths, resulted in parts of the Rano Divisional Police Station being set ablaze after news of Musa’s death spread throughout the community.

Musa had been arrested on Sunday over a traffic-related offense, but tragically lost his life while in detention, sparking widespread anger and grief.

Tensions escalated when what began as a peaceful demonstration turned chaotic. Enraged protesters vandalized sections of the police station and torched several vehicles.

The situation worsened when police officers reportedly opened fire on the crowd, injuring two young men. This action further intensified the community’s outrage, with locals decrying both the alleged mistreatment of Musa and the violent response to the protest.

Kano State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident to Punch, acknowledging the destruction at the police facility.

“Part of the police station was destroyed by the protesters,” Haruna stated.

In the wake of the violence, Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, accompanied by the Chairman of Rano Local Government Area, Mallam Mohammed Naziru Ya’u, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the damage and the situation on the ground.

Haruna added, “The Commissioner of Police, alongside the Rano LGA Chairman, visited the Rano Divisional Headquarters following the unfortunate death and subsequent attack on the station.”
