Oyo Govt Backs Falconets With ₦110m Ahead Of World Cup Qualifier
The Oyo State Government has approved plans to host Nigeria’s U-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, in Ibadan ahead of their decisive FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda. The return-leg fixture is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.
The decision followed Tuesday’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Acting Governor Bayo Lawal at the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works, Abdulmojeed Mogbojubola, disclosed that ₦110 million had been approved to cover logistics, accommodation, feeding, security, and other expenses required for the team’s stay in the state. He emphasized that hosting the Falconets would spotlight Ibadan on the national stage, further cementing its reputation as a hub for major sporting events.
Mogbojubola explained that the support for the national team forms part of the state government’s broader agenda to strengthen sports development and youth empowerment. He added that the initiative aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s Roadmap for Sustainable Development (2023–2027), which prioritizes youth-focused and sports-driven programmes.
“Hosting the Falconets not only boosts their morale but also inspires our local athletes and young talents to aim for international standards,” he said, expressing optimism about the team’s chances. He also called on residents of Ibadan and sports enthusiasts across Oyo State to turn out in large numbers to cheer the Falconets to victory.
