Passengers Furious: NCAA Exposes Violations But Refuses Ban Here’s Why

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to pursue legal action against Kenya Airways for violating aviation regulations but clarified why an outright ban is not feasible…….READ MORE

According to Ireporteronline, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, made this disclosure on Saturday while addressing multiple complaints filed against Kenya Airways by Nigerian passengers, including a notable case involving Gloria Omisore.

Achimugu explained that Kenya Airways mishandled Omisore’s complaint, claiming ignorance of the NCAA’s regulations. “The Kenya Airways team claimed ignorance of the NCAA Regulations. We are sending them a copy. But how can an airline operate in a foreign country without adhering to the local regulations? This is unacceptable,” he stated.

In response to these infractions, Achimugu revealed that the NCAA is organizing a retreat for all airlines operating in Nigeria to ensure full understanding of Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023. He emphasized that several unresolved issues, such as unpaid refunds, uncompensated lost baggage, and failure to honor commitments, were brought to Kenya Airways’ attention during the meeting.

“The NCAA will initiate stringent enforcement actions against Kenya Airways through due process. Our legal department has been put on notice,” Achimugu added.

When questioned about why Kenya Airways isn’t being banned despite these issues, Achimugu clarified that bilateral relations between Nigeria and Kenya play a crucial role.

“Sanctions aren’t meant to punish but to ensure compliance with regulations for passenger safety and better travel experiences,” he noted. Achimugu also highlighted that Kenya Airways operates 10 weekly flights into Lagos, contributing significantly to aviation activity between both nations.

He assured the public that while the NCAA would enforce the law without bias, it would not disrupt Nigeria-Kenya diplomatic relations. “The NCAA Consumer Protection Department also ensures that Kenya Airways is treated fairly where applicable, and we address all complaints based on merit,” Achimugu explained.

Despite facing criticism from Kenyan nationals online, Achimugu stated, “I’m not engaging in banter. I understand their loyalty to the airline, but our focus remains on passenger rights and safety.”
