According to FCT Police Commissioner, Benneth Igweh, the syndicate was exposed when a resident of Abuja recognized his friend’s stolen car being offered for sale at a car dealership during a visit to Lagos.

Upon identification, the victim traveled to Lagos to verify the authenticity of the vehicle.

Confirming that the car was indeed his stolen Toyota Camry, the victim promptly notified the FCT Police.

Following this revelation, police detectives were dispatched to the location. They discovered that the original chassis of the stolen vehicle had been tampered with. Nevertheless, they successfully recovered the car and apprehended the criminals involved.

Commissioner Igweh stated, “On 1st May 2024, at about 3 pm, acting on credible intelligence, police operatives of Apo Legislative Quarters, trailed and arrested two notorious car theft suspects, namely, Anthony Chibuzor and his associate Jonas Chikwe, both residents of Lagos State. They have been on the command’s wanted list and are part of a notorious car theft syndicate operating in the FCT and its environs.”

He further added, “Three vehicles, for which the suspects failed to provide satisfactory explanations, were recovered. These include a Toyota Camry with Registration No. Lagos 23, an Audi A4 with Registration No. KRD 349 JD, and a Honda Accord Sports with Registration No. BDG 42 JC. The suspects had altered the chassis numbers of some of these vehicles.”
