ASP Henry Okoye, the police command’s spokesperson, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday, reporting the death of three suspects and the arrest of two individuals, David Ifeanyichukwu, 20, and Abuchi Joseph, 24.
Okoye explained that the operation was conducted by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit after thorough investigation and intelligence gathering.
“On December 19, 2024, police engaged the criminals in a fierce gunfight in Orogwe,” he stated. He added that the gang was responsible for the abduction of Osuji Chimereze and three others on November 12, 2024, during which they also stole a Mercedes Benz and other items.
During the clash, police recovered six AK-47 rifles, 113 rounds of ammunition, a locally made firearm, and two vehicles—a stolen Mercedes Benz ML 350 with the registration number RRT 469 FF and a Hijet shuttle bus JRV 42 XA—used in their criminal activities.
“Sadly, two police officers were injured in the firefight and later succumbed to their injuries. The Imo State Police Command deeply mourns their loss and applauds their commitment while serving,” he added.
Okoye emphasized that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who fled during the raid.
In related news, the police department donated palliatives on Tuesday to the families of 30 fallen officers as a recognition of their sacrifice, particularly during the holiday season. The aid included bags of rice, a live cow, and cash gifts.
Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Sirajo Fana, pledged to prioritize the welfare of officers’ families and encouraged them to stay strong.
Mrs. Gift Ubi, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generous donations, highlighting their importance as both material assistance and emotional support during Christmas.
