Prominent Judge Haruna Tsammani Asked Nigerians To Forgive President Tinubu For Controversial Drug Case? – Fact Emerge
Posts circulating on Facebook claim that Judge Haruna Tsammani has asked Nigerians to forgive President Bola Tinubu for his alleged drug crime.
A post dated September 8, 2023, features a photo of the judge along with a quote that reads: “Since Jesus can forgive and forget why can’t you forgive Tinubu’s drug crime.”
Judge Tsammani presides at Nigeria’s Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), leading the panel that heard the petition filed by opposition leaders challenging Tinubu’s victory in the February 2023 presidential elections. On September 6, the court upheld Tinubu’s election as president.
The alleged drug case refers to a 1993 matter in which Tinubu forfeited US$460,000 to the US government. Although there were allegations of involvement in money laundering and drug trafficking, Tinubu was never convicted on drug trafficking related charges in the US.
Opposition leaders who contested Tinubu’s February 2023 win raised the drug case, arguing that he should not have been allowed to run for president.
Similar quotes have been attributed to Tsammani in various sources. However, there is no evidence to support the claim that Judge Tsammani made such a statement.
No credible media reports or the final ruling of the presidential tribunal headed by Tsammani mention this comment.
The lack of specific details about when or where the judge supposedly made this statement raises suspicions. There is no indication that Tsammani has publicly asked Nigerians to “forgive” the president for any alleged drug crime.
