Reactions Spark Over The Huge Number Of Nigerians Addicted To Drug Abuse – NDLEA
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that an estimated 14 million Nigerians are currently battling addiction to harmful substances.
This alarming statistic was shared by Mrs. Yetunde Joyifous, Deputy Commander of NDLEA’s Ondo State Command, during a drug abuse awareness program organized by the Oijefon Youth Council for secondary schools in the Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area……READ MORE
Joyifous explained that the substances being abused are primarily chemical agents that negatively alter users’ mental states.
She emphasized that community-wide collaboration is crucial in tackling this crisis, urging all stakeholders to join forces with the authorities to combat the spread of drug abuse.
“I commend the Oijefon Youth Council for partnering with NDLEA in the fight against drug abuse,” she said, stressing that secondary school students are among the most vulnerable and need immediate intervention.
In his opening remarks, Adedokun Adeyonu, President of the Oijefon Youth Council, said the sensitization initiative aims to discourage youths from drug abuse, which often begins due to peer pressure, curiosity, or as an escape from personal challenges.
“Drug abuse involves consuming harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs in ways that damage the body and mind,” Adeyonu explained.
He also highlighted how exposure to movies and music can influence young people toward drug use and called on society to play a role in ensuring a healthier future for the youth.
The event attracted secondary school students, officials from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and other community stakeholders, all united in the mission to curb drug abuse among Nigerian youth.
