Return To Parliamentary Government Urgent For Nigeria, Declares Aregbesola
Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State, has called for Nigeria to abandon its presidential system in favor of a parliamentary structure. Speaking at a National Dialogue on Home-Grown Parliamentary Systems in Abuja, Aregbesola argued that no single…CONTINUE RAEDING….
individual can effectively govern a nation of over 120 million people without adequate checks and balances.
He stated, “Believing that one person, however competent, can govern such a large population alone without checks is unrealistic.” He stressed that a parliamentary system, which allows for a more collective leadership approach, would better serve Nigeria’s interests.
Aregbesola’s remarks align with recent efforts in the House of Representatives, where a group of lawmakers introduced a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution, advocating for a transition to a parliamentary system to reduce governance costs amid declining revenues.
