follows a heated exchange with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun during the 2025 budget defense for the Nigeria Police Force.
The committee’s concerns stem from ongoing issues of inadequate police funding, which have hindered effective planning and service delivery, as highlighted by the IGP during his budget presentation. Tensions flared when Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, pointed out discrepancies between the copy of the budget presented by the IGP and the version in his hands. This led to a heated debate, with Nwebonyi demanding that the IGP’s actual presentation be made available to all committee members.
Amidst the uproar, Committee Chairman Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed allowed the IGP to proceed with an abridged version of his presentation, despite resistance from some members, including Nwebonyi, who stormed out of the session in protest.
Meanwhile, other lawmakers, such as Hon. Stanley Adedeji, Chairman of the House of Representatives ICT Committee, emphasized the need for a more flexible budgeting approach to improve national security and facilitate better communication within the police force.
As the debate continues, the push for a revised approach to police funding gains momentum, with the National Assembly seeking to ensure that Nigeria’s police force receives the support necessary to tackle security challenges effectively.
