Rising Food Costs Drive Nigerians To Embrace Roadside Vendors For Savings
As food inflation continues to tighten its grip on households across Nigeria, a growing number of consumers are opting for a more affordable alternative: roadside food vendors. In a stark shift from their usual dining habits, Nigerians are now turning to humble roadside vendors for their daily sustenance. The allure of these vendors lies in their ability to offer wallet-friendly options amidst soaring food prices, providing relief for cash-strapped families struggling to make ends meet.
Sekinat Shodimu, a fashion designer, lamented the harsh economic realities, citing exorbitant prices for staple foods like rice and noodles. She recounted how the cost of a simple meal has skyrocketed, prompting her to abandon pricey restaurants in favor of more economical roadside options, where a plate of food can be procured for as little as N300 to N500.
Jude Balogun, a trader, echoed similar sentiments, detailing his transition from eateries to local bukas and ultimately to street vendors as prices continued to climb. With the cost of a plate of eba or rice ballooning to as much as N2,500, Balogun found solace in the affordability of roadside fare, allowing him to drastically cut his daily food expenses.
However, for roadside vendors like Mrs. Kelechi Adams, the struggle to stay afloat amidst fluctuating food prices is all too real. Despite offering budget-friendly meals, Adams highlighted the challenges of running a food business in an environment plagued by daily increments in food costs and operational expenses.
In the face of mounting economic pressures, Nigerians are being forced to adapt their eating habits to survive, with roadside vendors emerging as beacons of affordability in a sea of escalating food prices
