Russia Denies Involvement in Nigerian Protests Displaying Its Flag
Russian Embassy in Nigeria has firmly denied any involvement in the use of Russian flags during recent hunger protests across the country. According to Vanguard Newspaper, the embassy issued an official statement clarifying that neither the Russian government nor its representatives were involved in the protests.
In its statement, the embassy emphasized Russia’s commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations, including Nigeria. It highlighted Russia’s respect for the democratic processes within Nigeria, reinforcing its stance on maintaining diplomatic decorum.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has taken a strong stance against the display of Russian flags during the protests. Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa labeled the act as treasonous, warning that those involved will face prosecution. He stressed that exhibiting foreign flags in such a manner constitutes a severe offense under Nigerian law.
Adding to this, the Nigerian Police Force has arrested 31 individuals accused of producing and distributing Russian flags, as well as inciting unrest. The police described these actions as treacherous, further intensifying the government’s crackdown on such activities.
The protests, which have erupted in several northern states, have seen participants carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin. These demonstrations have sparked significant controversy, with the Nigerian government condemning the actions and stressing the importance of lawful and peaceful protests.
The government reiterated its commitment to allowing peaceful demonstrations but warned against any actions that could lead to disruptions or violence, underscoring the need for adherence to Nigerian laws.
This development has added a complex layer to the ongoing protests, highlighting the geopolitical sensitivities involved and the Nigerian government’s firm stance on maintaining national sovereignty and order.
