Russia Flexes Muscles In Libya To Fill Syria’s Void
Russia is shifting its strategic focus from Syria to Libya as it seeks to maintain its influence in Africa following the fall of Bashar al-Assad. and into regions such as the Sahel, Sudan, and the Central African Republic. However, the recent political transition in Syria has disrupted these efforts, prompting Russia to pivot towards Libya as a new launchpad for its African ambitions.
In Libya, Russian support has been directed towards Khalifa Haftar, a military leader controlling eastern regions, while the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) is recognized by the UN and supported by Turkey. The transfer of Russian military resources, including S-300 and S-400 defense systems, highlights Moscow’s continued efforts to maintain a foothold in the region despite increasing international scrutiny.
Experts suggest that Russia’s approach is a continuation of its long-term strategy to expand its influence in Africa, disrupting Western interests while navigating a more complex political landscape in Libya compared to Syria.
