According to Ireporter Online, Shettima shared the touching experience during a memorial event held in Abuja to mark the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, while receiving medical attention in London. His remains were later brought back to Nigeria and buried at his private residence in Daura, Katsina State.

Recounting the circumstances surrounding his visit to London, Shettima said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had instructed him to travel to the United Kingdom after receiving reports that Buhari was unwell.

The Vice President explained that Tinubu asked him to assess the situation and ensure that the former president received all necessary support.

Shettima said his encounter at the hospital was deeply emotional, adding that he struggled to hold back tears after seeing Buhari in the intensive care unit.

He disclosed that he met Buhari’s children, Zara and Yusuf, shortly after leaving the ICU, describing the moment as a painful and unforgettable experience.

The Vice President also described the responsibility of accompanying Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria as one of the greatest honours he has experienced.

The remembrance ceremony was attended by members of Buhari’s family, political associates, former military officers, governors, traditional rulers and diplomatic representatives.

Representing President Tinubu at the event, Shettima conveyed the Federal Government’s continued support for Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and the late president’s family.

Tinubu, in his tribute, described Buhari as a committed statesman and political partner who dedicated his life to serving Nigeria.

The President praised Buhari’s patriotism, discipline and commitment to the country, noting that he remained loved and respected by many Nigerians even after leaving office.

Tinubu said Buhari’s influence extended beyond his time in government, as ordinary citizens continued to show him respect and affection during his retirement.

He urged Buhari’s associates, followers and political allies to preserve his legacy by upholding values such as honesty, simplicity and self-discipline.

According to the President, Buhari’s greatest inheritance to Nigeria was not only his leadership record but also the principles of integrity and commitment he represented throughout his public service.
