Senate Refutes State Creation Claims, Schedules Tribute for Buhari
The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has categorically denied widespread rumours circulating on social media suggesting that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states.
Speaking during plenary on Tuesday in response to an inquiry by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), Akpabio clarified that while the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 different proposals for the creation of new states, none have advanced through the required constitutional processes.
“The process for creating a state is extensive and demanding. Although many proposals have been submitted, none have undergone full deliberation or met constitutional requirements,” Akpabio said.
He cautioned citizens against holding community meetings or engaging in mobilisation efforts for states that have not been legally recognised, reiterating that no new state has been approved or ratified by the Senate.
Akpabio further urged Nigerians to rely solely on official communications from the National Assembly when it comes to matters related to constitutional amendments and state creation.
Meanwhile, the Senate is set to convene a special session on Wednesday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The tribute will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to reflect on his contributions to national development and leadership legacy.
This move underscores the Senate’s commitment to upholding procedural transparency and paying respects to past leaders who have played pivotal roles in the nation’s history.
