Edo State, with its extensive network of over 34 State government-owned hospitals and more than 7,000 private health facilities, faces a staggering healthcare crisis. The alarming part us that, only three of these government hospitals are currently operational, leaving the majority of residents struggling to access adequate and affordable medical care. To compound the issue, research has shown that about 10% of private health facilities are not registered with government authorities, leaving the burden of healthcare in the hands of unqualified practitioners and exposing the population to potential risks and danger.

Senator Okpebholo is stepping up with a bold and visionary blueprint to address this dire situation and overhaul the state’s healthcare system. His vision focuses on making primary healthcare universally accessible across all regions of Edo State. Central to his plan is the expansion of healthcare services for women, children, retirees, and the elderly through a robust and practical health insurance program.

In reality, “Health can only be wealth when it is made affordable at the grassroots level,” Senator Okpebholo emphasizes that his administration will be committed to improving the current doctor-patient ratio of 1:5,000, aiming to meet the World Health Organization’s ideal benchmark of 1:600. This ambitious goal will be pursued through a comprehensive strategy that includes upgrading existing facilities, increasing the number of healthcare professionals, and developing a community-based healthcare delivery system.

Akpakomiza’s approach promises not only to enhance the quality of healthcare but also to ensure that every resident of Edo State receives the medical attention they need and deserves, thus transforming the state’s healthcare landscape for the better.
