According to the latest Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey from the NBS, a staggering 51.89 million crime incidents were reported within Nigerian households during the reference period. The North-West region was the hardest hit, recording 14.4 million incidents, while the South-East had the lowest with 6.18 million reported crimes.

Kidnapping Epidemic
The report underscores the severity of kidnapping in Nigeria, with an alarming 4.14 million households affected by home robberies. Of those victims, 65% were forced to pay ransom to secure the release of loved ones. On average, Nigerians paid a hefty N2.67 million each in ransom, contributing to the overall N2.23 trillion sum.

Crime Rife in Rural Areas
The survey also highlighted a stark divide in crime rates between rural and urban areas, with rural households experiencing 26.53 million crime incidents compared to 25.36 million in urban centers.

Despite these alarming statistics, only 36.3% of robbery victims and a similarly low number of kidnapping victims reported the crimes to the police. The lack of trust in law enforcement remains a major barrier, with many Nigerians feeling police intervention would be futile.

Widespread Fear and Low Reporting
The survey also revealed that 21.4% of Nigerians fell victim to crimes, with phone theft being the most common, affecting 13.8% of the population. While 90% of phone theft victims reported the crimes to the police, only half were satisfied with the response.

The data also paints a grim picture of sexual violence, with an estimated 1.4 million Nigerians falling victim to sexual offenses, mostly within homes. However, only 22.7% of these victims reported the crimes to the authorities.

A Sense of Insecurity
Public perceptions of safety remain overwhelmingly low, with 9.6% of Nigerians fearing they will be victims of crime in the next year. Rural areas reported higher levels of fear, with 13% of residents feeling vulnerable compared to just 7% in urban areas.

The Strain on Security Agencies
The NBS report also highlights the public’s dissatisfaction with the response times of Nigeria’s security agencies. Only 33.1% of emergency calls received a response within 30 minutes. Local security forces, such as vigilante groups, are often viewed as more reliable than the police.

This alarming situation calls for urgent reform to tackle the rising tide of insecurity and restore public trust in law enforcement.
