Smugglers Jailed 2 Years For Assaulting Officers With Charms and Whips

In a significant victory for the Nigeria Customs Service, two smugglers, Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili, have been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labor for assaulting customs officers in Ogun State.

Announcing the verdict, National Public Relations Officer of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, revealed that Honourable Justice Demi-Ajayi of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, handed down the sentence without the option of fine. The convictions, secured on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, stemmed from the duo’s involvement in contravening customs laws, possession of smuggled goods, and assaulting officers with charms and horsewhips at Owoyele-Igbogila, Yewa-North Local Government, Ogun State, in 2023.

“The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, emphasized that justice has been served as 11 suspects were convicted for various offenses, including improper importation, assault of customs officers, and possession of Pangolin scales meant for export,” Maiwada stated.

Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili were initially arraigned in May 2023 on a three-count charge and have been in remand at the correctional center in Abeokuta until their recent conviction. The Customs Service reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing other smuggling cases diligently, ensuring that justice is served.
