Stakeholders Call For Negotiated Settlement in Rivers Political Crisis
The political tension in Rivers State has escalated following a Supreme Court ruling that favored the pro-Wike group, leading to threats of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the House of Assembly led by Martin Chike Amaewhule. Key political figures have suggested that a negotiated settlement is necessary to end the crisis. Chief Martin Onovo, a seasoned politician and 2015 presidential candidate, mentioned that although Wike has reportedly rejected efforts by the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) to mediate, the dispute could either continue until one party is conclusively defeated or be resolved through intervention by President Tinubu.
Dr. Victor Mathew, a security expert, echoed these views, criticizing Wike for his obsession with power and control over state resources, which he believes is undermining the interests of the people. He also called for the president to take more action to resolve the issue, arguing that Wike’s actions were motivated by personal and political gain, especially with the 2027 elections in mind.
The crisis has also fragmented the people of Rivers, dividing them along tribal lines, which politicians are exploiting. Both experts agree that the resolution of the conflict lies with Wike and the state lawmakers, who must prioritize the state’s development over personal interests. The people of Rivers are urged to play a more active role in demanding an amicable resolution.
