Suicide Bomber Targets Military Convoy, 27 Soldiers Dead In Northeast
At least 27 Nigerian soldiers lost their lives in a brutal suicide attack by jihadists in the northeastern part of the country, military sources confirmed on Sunday. Several other soldiers were critically injured..Suicide Bomber Targets Military Convoy, 27 Soldiers Dead In Northeast
in the attack.
The incident occurred on Friday evening during a ground offensive targeting militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in a region straddling Borno and Yobe states, a notorious stronghold of insurgents. The attack took place at around 8:30 pm GMT.
Sources reported that the suicide bomber drove a vehicle filled with explosives into a convoy of advancing soldiers. The vehicle was hidden within dense vegetation, making it difficult for troops to detect it in the darkness.
One military officer confirmed that the suicide attack killed 27 soldiers, including their commander, while many others were seriously wounded. The officer also noted that the dark conditions hindered the troops’ ability to properly survey the area and anticipate the attack.
While military officials have not yet released an official statement or identified the deceased soldiers, the attack highlights the continuing threat posed by ISWAP, which split from Boko Haram in 2016 and has since become a dominant force in the region. The group is notorious for its attacks on both military and civilian targets, often using roadside bombs and explosive-laden vehicles.
In 2024, a similar attack in a village controlled by ISWAP resulted in the deaths of seven soldiers. The ongoing insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced nearly two million people, with violence spilling over into neighboring countries, prompting the formation of a regional military force to combat the militants.
