Tension In Abuja: FCT Officials Clash With TVC Journalist At Bus Terminal

Tension broke out at the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja on Wednesday following an alleged confrontation between facility officials and a TVC News journalist who was reporting on damage caused by a recent rainstorm. According to Ireporter Online, the incident, which has since gained traction online, involved attempts by some individuals identified as terminal authorities to obstruct media coverage at the scene.

Footage circulating on social media showed a group of men reportedly trying to seize the journalist’s camera while the crew was documenting the extent of the damage. The situation escalated briefly as the TVC News team resisted the move, resulting in a standoff at the terminal.

Reports indicate that the interference was not limited to one media outlet, as other journalists present were allegedly intimidated and prevented from capturing visuals of the affected facility. The disruption occurred in the aftermath of a heavy downpour on Tuesday, accompanied by strong winds that reportedly tore off parts of the terminal’s roofing and scattered debris across the busy Maraba–Nyanya corridor in the Federal Capital Territory.

The damage led to significant traffic congestion in the area, with commuters facing delays and, in some cases, resorting to trekking long distances due to flooded roads and obstruction caused by debris.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal, a major infrastructure project overseen by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is part of a broader ₦51 billion initiative approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2024 for the development of three key transport hubs in Abuja. The terminals, located in Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District, are being handled by Planet Projects Nigeria Limited.

Although the Kugbo facility is yet to commence full commercial operations, the recent structural damage has raised concerns among residents and commuters about the durability of newly completed public infrastructure. Some have questioned how a project of such scale could be so easily affected by adverse weather conditions, calling for stricter quality assurance and safety measures.

Beyond infrastructure concerns, the incident has reignited conversations around press freedom and the safety of journalists. Media stakeholders have emphasized the need to protect journalists from harassment while carrying out their duties, noting that unrestricted reporting is essential for transparency and public accountability in government projects.
