Tinubu Names Disu Acting IGP, Accepts Egbetokun’s Exit

President Bola Tinubu has officially accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, citing personal and family considerations. According to reports, the resignation letter was submitted and received on Tuesday, prompting the President to acknowledge Egbetokun’s service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the outgoing IGP for his decades of dedicated service, highlighting his professionalism, commitment, and contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture. Egbetokun had been appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term set to end in June 2027, as stipulated by the amended Police Act.

To address ongoing security challenges, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect. The statement noted that Disu’s operational experience and leadership capabilities are expected to provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this transitional period.

In accordance with the Police Act 2020, a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council will be convened to consider Disu’s formal appointment as substantive Inspector-General, after which his name will be submitted to the Senate for confirmation. The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining a professional, accountable, and well-equipped police force capable of upholding national security and fulfilling its constitutional duties.
