Political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections gained momentum on Tuesday as President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting with governors of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The summit, hosted by the PGF at the State House Banquet Hall, commenced at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu serving as Special Guest of Honour. According to informed sources, the meeting aims to strengthen dialogue between the federal government, state governors, and organized labour amid ongoing economic challenges and political recalibration.

Officials familiar with the summit disclosed that the discussions will focus on promoting governance dialogue, stakeholder collaboration, and inclusive participation in national development initiatives. The NLC leadership is reportedly expected to present a charter of demands to the President, advocating for wage increases, job protection, and initiatives to support workers during Nigeria’s economic and climate transitions.

The proposed measures include the creation of a dedicated Just Transition Fund, promotion of green jobs, reskilling programs, enhanced social protection mechanisms, and institutionalized tripartite dialogue involving government, employers, and labour unions. Sources also indicate that the NLC is pressing for safeguards against layoffs related to economic and climate reforms, investment in renewable energy and sustainable industries, and expanded pensions, healthcare access, and unemployment safety nets.

A labour official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the meeting as potentially pivotal. He noted that disputes over wages, fuel subsidy removals, and inflation have strained labour-government relations, and that direct engagement at Aso Rock represents an effort to reset the narrative ahead of 2027. The official added that governors’ participation underscores coordinated political alignment, with the outcome likely determining whether negotiations replace street protests as the primary avenue for labour influence.
