Tinubu’s Listening Ear: Abbas Expresses Gratitude For GCON Honor To House Of Reps
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for bestowing upon him the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
According to Naija News, the House recently rejected the honor of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) that was initially conferred on the Speaker, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio received the GCON.
The House argued that it holds the same status as the Senate and requested that the President grant the Speaker the GCON honor.
In his statement on Saturday, Speaker Abbas acknowledged that the President had rectified errors made by previous administrations.
“I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for addressing the oversight of not recognizing the House’s constitutional status in prior administrations. The President has reaffirmed his democratic values as a true leader who listens to the voices of the people.
“With this decision, both Nigeria and the global community can see that the House of Representatives is equal in stature to the Senate and deserves to be treated as such.
“I am grateful to the President for responding to the reasoned arguments from the House and other concerned Nigerians.
“I also congratulate the 10th House of Representatives for this significant achievement.
“My thanks go out to my colleagues for standing up against the long-standing discrimination faced by the House, which we have now collectively addressed,” Abbas posted on his X handle.
