UK Conducts Hundreds Of Raids, Arrests Over 600 For Illegal Employment

According to the Home Office, immigration enforcement teams carried out 823 raids across the country, marking a 48% increase from the previous year. These efforts resulted in 609 arrests—a significant 73% rise compared to January 2023. This surge is part of a broader initiative to curb illegal migration, dismantle smuggling networks, and restore order to the UK’s immigration system.

A statement from the UK government, titled “UK-wide Blitz on Illegal Working to Strengthen Border Security,” emphasized this renewed commitment.

Authorities focused on industries notorious for hiring undocumented workers, such as nail salons, convenience stores, restaurants, and car washes. Notable raids included:

• Cheshire: Ten individuals arrested at vape shops, with two detained for possessing counterfeit documents.
• Humberside: Seven arrested at an Indian restaurant, four of whom were placed in detention.
• South London: A grocery warehouse raid led to six arrests and four detentions.

Employers found guilty of hiring undocumented workers now face hefty penalties, with fines reaching up to £60,000 per illegal employee.

The Home Office highlighted that many undocumented migrants are lured into the UK under false pretenses, only to face harsh working conditions, low wages, and exploitation. Rogue employers exploit this illegal labor while evading taxes and undercutting law-abiding businesses.

Eddy Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance, and Crime, stated, “These figures demonstrate our commitment to cracking down on those who flout our immigration laws. There’s no hiding from the law.”

Beyond workplace enforcement, the government has ramped up deportations. Over 16,400 individuals without legal status have been removed since the last general election, marking the highest rate of expulsions since 2018.

Bespoke charter flights have facilitated the deportation of over 800 offenders, including some of the most significant removal operations in the UK’s history. The new Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill will further empower law enforcement to disrupt smuggling operations, including seizing mobile phones from individuals entering the country illegally.

To deter illegal migration, the UK has launched international awareness campaigns via social media in countries like Vietnam and Albania, highlighting the dangers of illegal work and exploitation.

In a broader move towards global cooperation, the UK will host the Landmark Border Security Summit at Lancaster House, London, on March 31 and April 1, 2025. The event will gather representatives from over 40 countries, the EU, and other international bodies to strengthen collaborative efforts against illegal migration.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the government’s resolve, stating, “We are boosting enforcement to record levels alongside tough new legislation to dismantle the criminal gangs that undermine our border security.”
