What Tinubu Must Do For Ministers To Succeed – Professor Adibe
Jideofor Adibe, a professor in the field of Political Science and International Relations at Nasarawa State University, expressed his belief that the newly inaugurated ministers have the potential to perform better if provided with the necessary support.
During an appearance on the television show “Politics Today” on Channels Television, the professor stated that the President’s leadership is crucial in enabling the ministers to work effectively and take calculated risks.
He emphasized the importance of the President setting a positive example to discourage wasteful practices within the government. Adibe indicated that for the ministers to function optimally, they should be granted the freedom to make decisions and take risks. He pointed out that this can be achieved by offering them political protection and assurance.
The professor illustrated his point by referring to historical instances such as Nasir El-Rufai’s demolitions during his time as the FCT minister under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration and Professor Charles Soludo’s bank consolidation efforts. Adibe highlighted that these initiatives saw success due to the strong leadership and determination of figures like Obasanjo, who provided the necessary political support.
Adibe drew a comparison with the current administration under President Buhari, suggesting that criticism of policies might lead to individuals being disavowed by the President. He mentioned the case of the naira redesign and how Buhari distanced himself from the controversy surrounding it, unlike what would have occurred under Obasanjo’s leadership.
In summary, the professor stressed that in order for ministers to be effective and make impactful decisions, they require a sense of political cover and assurance, as demonstrated by past examples.
