Wike Defends Okpebholo: “Peter Obi Must Seek Clearance Before Visiting Edo”
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has thrown his weight behind the recent statement by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, insisting that former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, must notify the state’s leadership before making any visit.
According to iReporter Online, Wike emphasized that Governor Okpebholo is absolutely right to demand prior notice, as the security and wellbeing of any high-profile visitor, especially a former presidential candidate, fall under the direct responsibility of the sitting governor. He further stated that such precautionary measures are not only reasonable but necessary in a politically charged environment.
Drawing from his own experience as Governor of Rivers State, Wike revealed that during Obi’s campaign stop in Rivers, he was duly notified in advance and ensured that adequate logistics and security arrangements were provided to support his visit. He noted that failure to provide such courtesy and coordination could put both the visitor and the state at risk.
According to iReporter Online, Wike made these remarks in Benin City during the unveiling of modern mass transit buses by the Edo State Government. His comments were in response to public reactions trailing Governor Okpebholo’s earlier declaration that Obi should not enter Edo State without first informing the state government.
Wike dismissed claims that Okpebholo’s position amounted to a political threat against Peter Obi. “When I was Governor of Rivers State, Peter Obi informed me before his campaign visit, and I made provisions for vehicles and logistics. At that level, anything that happens to him would be my responsibility,” he said.
According to iReporter Online, Wike concluded by firmly endorsing the Edo Governor’s stance and reiterated the importance of protocol and security considerations, regardless of political affiliation.
